Phalaenopsis, comes from the Greek 'phalaina' (moth) and 'opsis' (resembling). And indeed, the flowers of the Phalaenopsis resemble flying moth butterflies. That is why the plant is also called butterfly orchid. The flowers come in purple, pink, salmon, white and yellow and often have a creative speckled or striped pattern.
